HIPAA COMPLIANCE RESOURCES FOR HEALTHCARE

Healthcare organizations that provide services which

utilize medical information are specifically affected by

the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and HITECH in a variety of areas.

Hospitals, physicians, clinics, Health Information Exchanges (HIEs) and Regional Extension Centers (RECs) are just a few of the types of healthcare organizations that should proactively address compliance.

Any organization that  utilizes healthcare personnel (nurses, doctors or   counselors) in its daily operations, administers   medications, deals with medical information (physical or mental) or implements a group health plan for employees should be concerned with HIPAA.

Healthcare organizations should conduct a thorough assessment of business processes to ensure compliance with the "minimum necessary rule" of HIPAA as a starting point to meeting the requirements of HIPAA.  In addition, a security audit of IT and network environments, especially when using an Electronic Health Record, is critical to compliance. Finally, training of staff is a critical step in maintaining compliance.

Regulatory changes (ARRA of 2009) and court rulings that change the enforcement environment mean periodic training updates should be a key element of compliance.

HIPAA Solutions, LC provides consulting, auditing, training and remediation resources.

In addition, the HIPAA ComplyPAK™ suite of software tools can assist in establishing baseline compliance throughout an organization while significantly reducing the complexity and cost of compliance.
