After several false starts, the ONC has announced that the Office for Civil Rights will start audits in November of 2011 on 20 covered entities for compliance with HIPAA privacy, security and data breach notification rules Health Data Management (Goedert, Health Data Management, 11/8) and other industry publications indicate that Covered Entities (CEs) such as healthcare providers, etc., and possibly their Business Associates (BAs) may be audit targets.

Many organizations have deferred serious efforts to address compliance with HIPAA and HITECH in hopes that enforcement would not occur. This recent announcement confirms that Privacy and Security issues are now a priority for HHS and any organization that is subject to HIPAA and HITECH should correct non-compliant areas as quickly as possible.
